Luck favors HOF hopefuls Kelly, Modell, Guy

Rough road
Four of the top eight picks in the 2001 NBA draft came right out of high school. Did NBA officials learn their lesson? Here is how those picks are faring as NBA rookies:
No. 1 Kwame Brown (Washington) -- Averaging 3.0 points and 2.8 rebounds in 11.1 minutes per game in 33 games.
No. 2 Tyson Chandler (Chicago) -- Averaging 4.0 points and 3.3 rebounds in 14.1 minutes per game in 37 games.
No. 4 Eddy Curry (Chicago) -- Averaging 3.8 points and 2.4 rebounds in 10.8 minutes per game in 35 games.
No. 8 DeSagana Diop (Cleveland) -- Averaging 1.6 points and 1.0 rebound in 6.5 minutes per game in 10 games.
They'd probably all be happier playing college ball except on NBA paydays.

(Saturday, February 2, 2002) -- Timing is everything, and that could be good news for Buffalo Bills all-time quarterback Jim Kelly, controversial owner Art Modell and punter Ray Guy.
The list of finalists for today's Pro Football Hall of Fame selection is the weakest in many years and a minimum of four men must be chosen.
Next year's ballot will be significantly beefed up by newly-eligible candidates.
If Kelly (appears to be a lock), Modell (50-50) and Guy (a long shot) aren't elected today, they could have a long wait.
For Modell and Guy, this could be their last chance.
America has been in a patriotic fervor since Sept. 11, so it was interesting to see the New York Yankees reach the World Series and the New England Patriots reach Super Bowl XXXVI.
If the trend continues, the Philadelphia 76ers will make the NBA Finals again, the Washington Capitals will be in the Stanley Cup finals and the Rochester Americans will reach the Calder Cup finals.
Among those happy that the Patriots are getting a generous 14 points from the Las Vegas oddsmakers against the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI are Fox TV network and NFL officials and the sponsors who bought ads to be shown in the second half of Sunday's game.
If the favored Rams have a comfortable lead on the scoreboard entering the fourth quarter, the hefty spot to the Patriots could keep the betting public sucked in.
Add Rochester Boxing Hall of Fame president Tony Liccione to the list of boxing lovers who were pleasantly surprised by the Nevada Athletic Commission's decision to deny Mike Tyson a license to fight Lennox Lewis in Las Vegas April 6.
"I never thought they'd do it. Bravo for them," says Liccione. "It was long overdue for boxing authorities to hit Tyson with a KO punch.
"I liked the young Mike Tyson, but now he is a disgrace and bad for our great sport. He is corrupt, crude and rude.
"He is a horrible role model and I'm alarmed by the number of young people who seem to look up to him and sympathize with him.
"He'll probably wind up fighting Lewis somewhere overseas.
"I just wish he'd go away permanently."
The California State Athletic Commission will next meet Feb. 9 and is expected to consider a request that Tyson be issued a boxing license so he can fight Lewis in Los Angeles this spring.
Each would make at least $17.5 million.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission and New York State Athletic Commission already have done themselves proud by rejecting Tyson and California should follow their lead.
So should the other 47 states.
No one in the boxing world who is not on Tyson's payroll has provided a single logical explanation as to why he shouldn't have been permanently banned from the sport when he bit off a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear in their title fight in June 1997.
What has Tyson done since that disgraceful night to "earn" a title shot against Lewis? He has logged a total of 19 rounds in six fights, most of which were marred by his unsportsmanlike behavior.
For the record: Tyson has been paid around $170 million for his 16 fights in Nevada. It was a great gig while it lasted and it lasted too long.
Can Syracuse University basketball coach Jim Boeheim rally his embattled players -- starting tonight at Rutgers?
Preston Shumpert with a hurting shooting eye. Too little rebounding.
Short bench.
If I were a Syracuse Orangemen basketball fan, I'd be worrying about an NCAA Tournament bid slipping away and wondering if this team will have a chance to make dubious history by winning both the Preseason NIT and the Postseason NIT.
Zippy Chippy hasn't lost his form.
The losingest maiden in North American thoroughbred racing returned to action Thursday night and finished last in the ninth race at Penn National in Grantville, Pa.
The Zipster was 20-to-1 in the program for his first start since last September but faithful fans bet him down to 14-to-1 despite the fact that the 11-year-old gelding was facing much younger and better horses in the $10,190 maiden special weight race.
According to the Daily Racing Form chart of the race, Zippy Chippy "dropped back early and saved ground throughout and was outrun." He finished 33 lengths behind the winner and 20 lengths behind the sixth-place finisher.
Zippy Chippy is 0-for-92 for his racing career. He made his fame losing races at Finger Lakes Race Track, going 1-1 vs. Red Wings at Frontier Field and by beating a harness horse in a handicap march at Freehold Raceway in New Jersey.
Last year's two-year-old filly Finger Lakes Race Track sensation, Shesastonecoldfox, will make her 2002 debut today in the featured $50,000 ninth race at Tampa Bay Downs in Florida.
Shesastonecoldfox last raced October 27, when she set the pace before tiring badly to finish last in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Belmont Park.
She is owned by Dennis and Debbie Petrisak of Honeoye Falls, trained by A. Michael Ferraro and will be ridden by regular jockey John Grabowski.
Popular NBA trade rumor: Dallas forward Michael Finley and center and Utah native Shawn Bradley to the Jazz for Karl Malone and a draft pick. I always figured Bradley would end his career with the Jazz but I never thought Malone would leave the Jazz.
Cleveland Rockers starting point guard Helen Darling has a pretty good excuse if she misses the entire upcoming WNBA season.
She'll have triplets in April. The season starts May 25.
The Baltimore Orioles expect new center fielder Chris Singleton to bat second. Unfortunately, there still isn't a quality leadoff hitter in sight.
Does this mean Todd Zeile is a pretty good player or kind of a bad player?
The Colorado Rockies will be his ninth Major League Baseball team in the last eight years.
Former Rochester Lancers teenage goal-scoring whiz Branko Segota will play in a Major Indoor Soccer League Legends Game prior to the MISL All-Star Game in Cleveland's Gund Arena on Feb. 17.
