UR men defeat Chicago as Jones scores 16 points Democrat and Chronicle staff and wire reports
(Saturday, February 2, 2002) -- Brian Jones scored 16 points for the third straight game as Rochester defeated Chicago by three points for the second game in a row.
Rochester won 55-52 at the Palestra to improve to 7-1 in the University Athletic Association and 16-3 overall. The Yellowjackets, who defeated Chicago 54-51 at Chicago last Sunday, play Washington on Sunday.
Washington is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the NABC Division III Coaches Poll and is 8-0 in the UAA. Rochester is No. 14 in the poll.
Andy Larkin hit two free throws with 1.4 seconds left to give Rochester a 55-52 lead and a last-second 3-pointer by Chicago bounced off the left side of the rim.
Union 70, Hobart 69: Union (6-2 UCAA, 13-6) closed the game with a 7-0 run and Aaron Galletta's 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds left was the winner.
Joe Corbett scored 22 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, and had 7 assists for Hobart and Davidek Herron added 30 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Hobart (4-5, 9-11).
Brockport 70, Oswego 61: The Golden Eagles (9-1 SUNYAC, 18-1) trailed by two at halftime, but pulled away on 48-percent (16-for-33) shooting in the second half against Oswego (7-5, 12-8).
Alex Smith led Brockport with 21 points.
Nazareth 66, Alfred U. 55: Jimmy Evans scored 20 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and had 7 assists for the Golden Flyers (6-1 Empire 8, 12-6).
Alfred is 4-4, 9-9.
RIT 71, St. John Fisher 66: Brandon Redmond (Palmyra-Macedon) scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Tigers (4-3 Empire 8, 11-7).
Nick Ripple and Alpha White each scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures for the visiting Cardinals (4-4, 9-9).
Geneseo 61, Cortland 51: Joe Zera scored 16 points to lead visiting Geneseo (7-4 SUNYAC, 13-7), which pulled away from a 27-27 halftime tie. Steve Greco (Fairport) scored eight points for Geneseo.
Cortland is 2-8, 6-12.
Niagara 84, Iona 74: James Reaves (Edison) scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Purple Eagles (7-4 MAAC, 11-11) against Iona (7-5, 10-13).
WOMEN
Rochester 75, Chicago 44: Jen LaBuda scored 15 points for UR (4-4 UAA, 12-6), which had 11 different players score against the Maroons (4-4, 8-10).
The Yellowjackets scored 28 points off 25 Chicago turnovers and scored 21 points off 14 offensive rebounds.
Union 59, William Smith 49: Leah Cornwell (Wheatland-Chili) scored 17 points for the Herons (6-2 UCAA, 13-4), who shot just 31 percent from the floor. The host Herons took just eight free throws.
Nazareth 57, Alfred U. 51: The Golden Flyers (4-3 Empire 8, 9-8) led by 17 at halftime, then held down a second-half rally by visiting Alfred (2-6, 7-9).
Erin Michaels led three players in double figures for Nazareth with 16 points.
Cortland 66, Geneseo 47: Geneseo (6-5 SUNYAC, 12-8) was held to just 10 points in the first half and was 2-for-26 from the floor against Cortland (8-2, 11-6).
Kendra Vavrina (Pittsford Sutherland) led Geneseo with 11 points.
Brockport 70, Oswego 67: Kristen Clark (Hilton) scored 21 points and was perfect (9-for-9) from the floor for Brockport (8-2 SUNYAC, 11-7) against host Oswego (6-6, 9-9).
St. John Fisher 66, RIT 58: Missy Lock scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the visiting Cardinals (7-1 Empire 8, 14-4), who forced 29 turnovers by RIT (0-7, 1-16).
Lauren Long led three RIT players in double figures with 13 points.
George Washington 63, St. Bonaventure 60: Stefanie Collins scored 19 points for the Bonnies (6-3 Atlantic 10, 12-8) against George Washington (9-0 Atlantic 10, 14-6).
