RIT routs Utica in ECAC hockey

UTICA (Saturday, February 2, 2002) -- Ryan Fairbran scored twice and had an assist to lead the visiting RIT Tigers to a 10-4 victory over Utica in men's hockey Friday night.

Brian Armes and Mike Tarantino each had a goal and two assists for the Tigers, (5-1 ECAC West, 17-2), ranked second nationally in NCAA Division III.

Sam Hill opened the scoring 9:53 into the first period for the Tigers. Utica tied the game three minutes later. Hill also added two assists.

The Tigers scored three consecutive goals in the first five minutes of the second period to take a 4-1 lead. Ryan Francke broke a 1-1 tie for RIT, assisted by Josh Faulkner and David Bagley (Gates Chili).

Bagley also added a goal and Faulkner finished with a goal and two assists for RIT, which had nine different players score.

Division III leading scorer Mike Bournazakis had a goal and an assist for RIT, which outshot Utica 39-22.

Utica falls to 1-5-1, 8-10-3.

The Tigers host Hobart at 7 p.m. tonight at Frank Ritter Memorial Arena.

Geneseo 3, Oswego 2: Derek Powell scored in the second period, one of three unanswered goals in the period, to give visiting Geneseo a 3-1 lead.

Andy Rice (Greece Arcadia) had two assists for Geneseo.

Brett Walker made 24 saves for Geneseo (5-4-1 SUNYAC, 8-12-1).

Oswego is 8-2, 14-7.

Geneseo hosts Cortland at 7 p.m. tonight.

Brockport 3, Cortland 3: Nick Smyth tied the game at 8:13 of the third period for visiting Brockport (0-8-2 SUNYAC, 4-15-2 overall). Smyth also scored in the second period for the Golden Eagles, who trailed 2-0 after the first period.

Mark Digby tied the game at 2 for Brockport. Goalie Steve Tippet made 35 saves for the Golden Eagles.

John Larnerd made 34 saves for Cortland (5-4-1, 11-8-2).

Brockport will travel to Oswego for a 7 p.m. game tonight.

Colgate 2, Brown 1: Rob Brown had a goal and an assist to lead the host Raiders.

The Raiders got on the board first when Brown took a shot from the point that deflected onto the stick of teammate Kyle Doyle, who passed to Etienne Morin. Morin then beat Brown goalie Yann Danis to give Colgate (8-13-1) a 1-0 lead at the 15:21 mark of the first period.

A little over two minutes later, Brown rebounded his own shot and scored to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead.

Brown (8-10-2) scored its lone goal when Les Haggett beat Colgate goalie David Cann at the 16:41 mark of the second period.

Cornell 5, Harvard 3: Sam Paolini (Spencerport) scored twice and added two assists while goaltender Matt Underhill made 17 saves as 10th-ranked Cornell won in an ECAC matchup to remain in first place in the league. The Big Red improved to 10-2-1, 14-5-1.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY

RIT 5, Union 3: Jen Gorczynsky (Greece Arcadia) scored twice to lead the visiting Tigers (10-2-1 ECAC East, 15-3-1 overall), who extended their winning streak to nine straight ECAC East league games.

Erin Topley recorded two assists for RIT. Kendra Bredlau, Colleen Baude, and Alysia Park each scored for the Tigers.

RIT outshot Union 34-11.

Diane Bornkamp started in goal for the Tigers and picked up the victory by stopping five of six shots over the first 40 minutes.

Sophomore goalie Elaine Vonderembse made five saves for RIT.

Union falls to 7-5-1, 7-11-2.

The Tigers host Union at 3:30 p.m. today.
