Cipura finishes 2nd in two races Democrat and Chronicle staff and wire reports
HAMILTON (Sunday, February 3, 2002) -- Roberts Wesleyan freshman Kim Cipura (Hilton) finished second in the women's 3,000-meter run (10 minutes, 43.48 seconds) and 5,000 (18:21.91) in the Colgate Class of '32 Invitational Indoor Track meet Saturday.
Melissa Werner of Roberts finished fourth in the women's weight throw (40 feet, 19.5 inches). Jamie Hall of Roberts finished fourth in the men's mile (4:27.17) and ninth in the 800-meter run (1:59.80).
Teammate Jeremy Smith finished fifth in the men's 5,000-meter run (15:59.79).
Other results:
Richard Harris (Hilton) finished second in the 60-meter high hurdles (8:30) for the Pioneers.
MEN'S HOCKEY
Monroe Community College 7, Broome 0: Jimmy Connolly scored two goals and had an assist for the Tribunes at ESL Centre.
Wayne Whitmore (Greece Arcadia) scored a goal and two assists for MCC. Ben Laing (Gates Chili) and Eric Zeller (Fairport) each had two assists for the Tribunes (11-4-2).
Oswego 8, Brockport 1: Pater Stasko scored for visiting Brockport (0-9-2 SUNYAC, 4-16-3).
Geneseo 2, Cortland 2: Brian Avery scored with 6:30 left to play to tie the game at 2 for Geneseo (5-4-2 SUNYAC, 8-12-2). Jon Campbell scored 1:47 into the game for Geneseo.
Cornell 2, Brown 0: Freshman David LeNeveu made 15 saves for the host Big Red.
After a scoreless first period, Matt McRae put Cornell (15-5-1) on the board with a goal at 5:40 in the second period.
Cornell increased its lead to 2-0 at 16:10 of the same period when Jeremy Downs scored his first career goal.
Yann Danis made 25 saves, 13 in the first period, for Brown (7-11-2).
Colgate 5, Harvard 3: Kyle Doyle scored three goals to lead the host Red Raiders (9-13-1).
Doyle picked up his third goal at 4:39 of the third period when he rebounded Rob Brown's shot to put Colgate ahead 5-2.
Harvard (9-8-3) pulled within 5-3 at 18:53 in the third on Tyler Kolarik's unassisted goal, but it proved to be too late.
Dmitry Yashin scored the second of his two goals at 6:32 in the second period when he rebounded an Etienne Morin shot in front of the crease and jammed it into the back of the net to extend the Colgate lead to 4-2.
The Raiders took the lead for good when Doyle took a pass from Ben Bryce and ripped a slap shot past Will Crothers to put Colgate ahead 3-2.
David Cann stopped 13 shots for the win. Crothers had 16 saves for the loss.
Dartmouth 3, Union 2: Kent Gillings scored a pair of power -play goals to lead the host Dartmouth to a come-from-behind victory.
Dartmouth (7-4-4 ECAC, 10-8-4) scored all of its goals in a span of 2:15 in the third period to erase a 2-0 Union lead.
Union (6-6-2 ECAC, 11-8-5) took a 1-0 lead in the first period when Jeff Wilson snapped a shot over Nick Boucher's shoulder.
Charles Simard extended the lead to two when he fired a shot off a faceoff past Boucher midway through the second period.
Brandon Snee had 44 saves for Union while Boucher stopped 35 shots for Dartmouth.
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 6, Vermont 4: Jim Henkel scored two goals, including the go-ahead goal in the third period, for visiting RPI.
Vermont (3-10-1 ECAC, 3-18-2) tied it at 3-3 early in the third when Scott Mifsud tipped in a shot from Jason Fortin.
Henkel then scored his second of the night on the power play at 6:31 of the third to give Rensselaer (4-7-3 ECAC, 10-10-4) a 4-3 lead.
Andrew McPherson added to RPI's lead moments later, finishing off a passing play from Carson Butterwick and CJ Hanafin.
WOMEN'S HOCKEY
RIT 4, Union 1: Chelsea Jonhson scored one goal and made two assists for the Tigers (11-2-1 ECAC East, 16-3-1).
Alysia Park and Kendra Bredlau each added one goal and one assist and Jen Gorczynski (Greece Arcadia) also scored one goal for RIT.
Elaine Vonderembse made 12 saves for her 14th victory of the season.
WRESTLING
Buffalo 34, Bucknell 8: Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport) scored a technical fall against Jacob O'Donnell in 3:04 at 149. Jacoutot recorded two near falls and seven takedowns.
Oneonta 34, RIT 14: RIT winners were Matt LoSchiavo at 157 pounds (7-3 decision), Pat North at 174 (16-1 decision) and Tony Wallace at 197 (pin 4:37). RIT is 4-12, Oneonta 8-7.
