Sold Out

All tickets for the Aquinas at McQuaid basketball game on Friday at 8 p.m. have been sold.

Fans at McQuaid purchased all 700 of the tickets available through the school in about two hours.

Aquinas (9-4) handed nationally-ranked McQuaid (14-1) its only loss of the season, 60-53 on Jan. 15. McQuaid is ranked 25th in the nation by USA Today.

Tickets for the dual wrestling meet, Canandaigua at Spencerport on Saturday, also are gone. Spencerport is ranked No. 1 in the state among large schools, while Canandaigua is fifth. Both teams are undefeated in duals.

Spencerport won last year's meeting in front of a sold-out crowd in Canandaigua.

No tickets will be available at the door for either the basketball game or wrestling meet.

Wayne Central has pre-sale tickets available for its home dual wrestling meet with Canandaigua on Thursday at 7 p.m. The charge is $2 for adults and $1 for students.

(Tuesday, January 29, 2002) -- Clayton Longmire scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half as Gates Chili defeated Aquinas 63-33 in a non-league boys basketball game Monday.

Ville Vesala made three 3-pointers and scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half as the host Spartans (12-2) pulled away from a two-point halftime lead. Gates Chili outscored Aquinas 46-18 in the second half.

Longmire, a senior, played his sophomore and junior seasons at Aquinas.

''We started hitting our shots in the second half and played very well defensively the entire game,'' said Gates Chili assistant coach Dan Lanning. ''Vesala did a very good job holding (Mark) Magliocco to two points, who we knew was a very good shooter.''

Neither team was shooting well in the first half, as the Spartans only led at the half 17-15.

''Both teams were playing very good defense the first half,'' said Lanning.

Longmire finished with eight blocked shots and grabbed a game-high 21 rebounds.

Kevin McMahan led Aquinas (9-5) with 19 points.

Gates Chili made a season-high eight 3-pointers.

The Spartans have won eight straight going into their home game against undefeated Fairport at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

MONROE COUNTY

Batavia 57, Brighton 46: Greg Frieday shot 6-for-10 from the free-throw line and made a 3-pointer in the final quarter for visiting Batavia.

Frieday finished with 21 points and Phillip Santiago added 18 points, scoring nine in the first quarter for Batavia.

Chris O'Rourke scored 17 points for Brighton (8-8).

GENESEE REGION

Elba 76, Kendall 54: Andy Thompson scored 11 of his 27 points in the third quarter to help Elba (8-3, 10-5) pull away.

Kevin Hamilton scored 16 points and Chris Rayburn added 11 for Kendall (4-6, 6-8).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

WAYNE COUNTY

Lyons 46, East Rochester 27: Mackenzie Marr and Ashley Stoughton each made three steals in Lyons' full-court pressure defense as the team jumped to a 14-4 lead. Danielle McCray scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Lions (12-0, 13-3).

East Rochester is 4-7, 6-9.

Sodus 68, Gananda 34: Senior center Keisha Wigent scored 27 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and made 7 steals to lead the Spartans (9-3, 10-6). Carly Jo Dodge made 10 assists to go with her 14 points.

Wigent scored 11 points in the third quarter to help the Spartans take a commanding lead into the fourth.

NEWARK TOURNAMENT

Championship, Newark 56, Aquinas 43: Angie Perillo scored eight of her 19 points in the first quarter as the Reds opened a 19-3 lead. Sarah Wlodarczyk added 14 points for Newark (11-4). Ali Sharpe scored 23 points to lead Aquinas (9-5).

NON-LEAGUE

Franklin 43, Victor 17: Natasha Johnson scored 22 points and added five assists as Franklin (7-1, 9-3) outscored Victor (9-7) 17-4 in the final quarter.

Adriane Reaser added 14 points and 15 rebounds for Franklin. Johnson hit five 3-pointers.

Geneva 50, North Rose-Wolcott 27: Karen Crisanti scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Geneva. Alexis Carter had five assists and scored nine points for the Panthers (6-11).

HOCKEY

MONROE COUNTY

Rush-Henrietta 4, Geneseo 4: Brandon Czerwinski tied the game with 38 seconds left in regulation for the host Royal Comets (10-7-4). Czerwinski knocked the puck in off a rebound from the far post. Czerwinski scored twice for R-H.

Josh Utberg scored a goal and made an assist and Brett Freese made 36 saves for Geneseo. R-H held a 40-16 advantage in shots.
