Whitcomb chooses Maine

Democrat and Chronicle

(Tuesday, January 29, 2002) -- East Rochester senior Ron Whitcomb, the Section V Ontario-Honda Class D player of the year, has accepted a full athletic scholarship from Division I-AA Maine.

Whitcomb played quarterback for the Bombers and finished as the school's all-time leader in touchdown passes (41), passing yardage (4,303) and completion percentage (53 percent).

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound two-sport athlete, who plays for East Rochester's boys basketball team, also considered going to Colgate and Fordham.

  • Edison Tech senior Jason Colson, a 2001 All-Greater Rochester running back, has changed his mind and decided to attend West Virginia instead of Syracuse University.

Colson originally gave a non-binding verbal commitment to the Orangemen, who planned to use him as a defensive back. West Virginia sees him as a running back, according to Colson.

Recruits can sign a letter of intent accepting scholarship offers beginning on Feb. 6. ''I'm definitely signing with West Virginia,'' Colson said. ''It's a place where I can have a bigger impact. They needed running backs.''
