Focused Fairport sinks Webster to stay unbeaten

(Wednesday, January 30, 2002) -- Fairport stayed undefeated with a 104-79 win at Webster in a Monroe County meet Tuesday.

Jon Roberts won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 2.12 seconds and the 100 breaststroke (1:00.29), Matt McGraw won the 100 butterfly (59.10) and Jim Wood won the 100 backstroke (56.74) for the Red Raiders (6-0 league, 10-0 overall).

Fairport took first and second in the 200 medley relay as McGraw, Roberts, Andy Amyot and Cyrus Salehi won in 1:44.01.

''That event really got our guys focused and we continued it from there,'' Fairport coach Mike Kennedy said. ''Webster is a team we really respect and we wanted to take the momentum.''

Steve Nims won the 50 freestyle (23.13) and 100 freestyle (50.21) and Chris Ekimoff won the 200 freestyle (1:49.49) and the 500 freestyle (4:57.72) for Webster (8-2).

MONROE COUNTY

Churchville-Chili 61, Irondequoit 41: Jeff Naughton won the 200 individual medley (2:11.97) and the 100 freestyle (52.73) as C-C (7-0, 9-5) clinched the Division II championship. Scott Horsington won diving with a school-record 264.05 points for the Saints.

Irondequoit is 6-1 league.

Gates Chili 61, Spencerport 39: Nick Grow won the 50 freestyle, setting a school record in 22.65, and also won the 100 freestyle (50.49) for the host Spartans (9-4). Zach Grobengieser won the 200 freestyle (1:54.03) and the 100 backstroke (59.62) for Spencerport.

Penfield 102, Greece I 53: Hal Grossman won the 200 freestyle (1:54.22) and the 500 freestyle (5:13.47) for visiting Penfield (2-4, 8-4). Kevin Palumbo won the 200 individual medley (2:12.99) and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.03) for Greece.

Greece Thunder 84, Rush-Henrietta 73: Ryan Payne won the 100 freestyle (52.62) to lead the Thunder (7-4). R-H is 2-8.

Brockport 95, Eastridge 74: Scott Snyder won the 200 freestyle (2:09.74) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.42), and Kevin Kewin won the 500 freestyle (5:52.74) and 100 backstroke (1:00.05) for Brockport (4-6).

CITY-CATHOLIC

East 43, Edison 37: Dave Toub won the 200 and 500 freestyles for visiting East (2-5). Kenny McNair won the 50 and 100 freestyles for Edison.

LIVINGSTON COUNTY

Honeoye Falls-Lima 120, Livonia 63: HF-L won its first Division I title since 1993.

Jeff Peters won the 200 individual medley (2:11.13) and the 100 butterfly (56.90) for HF-L. Ben Cooper won the 50 freestyle (22.61) and 100 freestyle (51.19) for the Cougars (10-0, 10-2).

GENESEE REGION

Wheatland-Chili 201, Attica 135: Will O'Brien tied for first in the 200 freestyle (2:03.04) and won the 100 freestyle (58.24) to lead the Wildcats (7-4).

Katie McMullen won the girls 200 and 500 freestyles for W-C.

NON-LEAGUE

Harley-Allendale-Columbia 53, Wilson 41: Paul Agostinelli won the 100 backstroke (1:10.02) to lead visiting H-A-C (4-8) to its third straight win.

Peter Gray won the 50 freestyle (24.84) and the 100 freestyle (56.93) for Wilson (6-6).
