R-H wins volleyball playoff vs. Athena

(Saturday, February 2, 2002) -- Heather Mummery had three digs in the fifth game as No. 8 Rush-Henrietta defeated No. 9 Greece Athena 3-2 in a Monroe County Division I Pre-Quarterfinal match Friday.

The Royal Comets won 27-30, 30-26, 29-31, 32-30 and 15-13.

Mummery finished with 13 assists, 9 kills and 14 digs.

Jacquie Pluffe had 16 digs, 14 kills and 3 aces for the Royal Comets (5-13).

Athena finishes 3-15.

The Royal Comets move on to play at No. 1 Gates Chili (15-2) at 10 a.m. today in the quarterfinals.

The other pre-quarterfinal games scheduled for Friday were moved to today.

SWIMMING

FINGER LAKES INVITATIONAL

at Canandaigua

Josh Hinman won the 100 butterfly in 54.31 seconds and the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 49.52 seconds as Weedsport-III took first place.

Brandon O'Meal won the 500 freestyle (5:11.49) and placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:53.22) for Palmyra-Macedon.

The invitational continues today with diving at 1 p.m. at Canandaigua.

LIVINGSTON COUNTY

DIVING CHAMPIONSHIP

at Honeoye Falls-Lima

Nick D'Alesandro scored 350.90 to win the diving championship. The championships continue at 2 p.m. today at SUNY Geneseo.

HOCKEY

MONROE COUNTY

Rush-Henrietta 5, Bishop Kearney/Eastridge 3: Rob Capellupo and Pat Harris both scored in the first period to give the Royal Comets a 2-0 lead.

Tom Tria scored a power-play goal for BK/E. Tria finished with two goals.

Brandon Merwinski scored a power-play goal and Justin Vane scored unassisted for R-H. Micheal Speight's shorthanded goal brought the Kings (6-15-1) within 4-3.

Tim Salewski iced the game off an assist by Capellupo, who had two assists on the night for the Royal Comets.

Gates Chili 3, Spencerport 2: Matt Peck scored the winner 1:17 into the third period for the Spartans at the ESL Centre. Nick Robillard and Jerid Gallipeau each added a goal for Gates Chili (9-6, 17-5). Phil Mannix scored both of the Rangers' goals.

McQUAID TOURNAMENT

at RIT

McQuaid 2, Ithaca-IV 1: Hunter Rapp scored the winner off assists from Joe DiCamillo and Torren Delforte with 6:05 remaining in the third period for the Knights (16-3-1).

Delforte tied the game in the third period off an assist from DiCamillo.

GYMNASTICS

MONROE COUNTY

Gates Chili 109.5, Penfield 108.05, Rush-Henrietta 97.5, Honeoye Falls-Lima 63.25: Emily Green of Penfield earned all-around honors with a score of 36.35. Green won the vault (8.85), floor (9.5), balance beam (8.9) and uneven bars (9.1).

Jackie Fichtner was second in the all-around competition with a 28.9 for Gates Chili. Katie McEnearey took third place with a 28.15 for HF-L (1-8). R-H is 4-8.
