Rhinos, Lynx kick in for charity game
By Jeff DiVeronica
(Saturday, September 22, 2001) -- How insignificant was the score of last night's Rhinos charity exhibition match with Toronto?
At halftime, it was removed from the Frontier Field scoreboard as a courtesy to the Lynx, who traveled and played without being paid just to help Rochester raise money.
The Rhinos were ahead 5-0 at halftime and won 7-0, but the most important numbers were approximately 6,000 fans and $30,000 from ticket revenue that will be donated to help the Red Cross' relief effort after last week's tragedy.
"It was definitely emotional for all of us, a touching night," said Rochester goalie Billy Andracki, who yesterday declined an invite by the MetroStars to play in the MLS playoffs. They need a goalie to replace injured Tim Howard.
Forwards Kirk Wilson and Neathan Gibson each had two goals and an assist for the Rhinos and midfielders Stoian Mladenov and Nate Daligcon each had a goal and assist.
Toronto's season has been over since Sept. 8 but No. 4 Rochester (16-6-4) is preparing for Game 1 of Wednesday's A-League quarterfinal playoff series opener vs. No. 12 Pittsburgh or No. 5 Charleston. Pittsburgh has a 2-1 lead.
