Head first into rock
There is only one thing that takes Alex Tosto and Billy Andaloro higher than their diving careers for the Churchville-Chili swim team.
That is rocking on stage with their group, Universal Mind, a heavy metal tribute band that covers songs by Creed and Godsmack and has performed at the Penny Arcade.
"It's such a rush, like the best time of my life," says lead singer Andaloro.

Kelly's comeback puts Webster back on track
For the first nine games this season, Webster basketball coach Scott Morrison penciled Colleen Kelly's name in the scorebook even though he knew she wouldn't be able to play.
The versatile senior guard was recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee suffered last June, but Morrison still put her name down.
"Hope, I guess," he says.

Kirca has big hand in success
The job of being a setter in volleyball is a lot like that of an offensive lineman in football: No one notices you until you're not there.
Long hours of practice and dedication are not rewarded with trumpets of glory. Fans usually cheer the scoring play, not the play that sets up the score.
Aysen Kirca knows this, but pays no mind.

Sideline report
The last thing Tom O'Neil, director of Sunday's Kearney Invitational Basketball Classic, wanted was to have the 13th annual event go head to head with the Super Bowl.
But when the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks pushed the big game back a week, that's what happened. Bishop Kearney officials tried to reschedule the event, which is at Blue Cross Arena at the Community War Memorial, but it wasn't feasible, athletic director Pat Grow said.
''We tried to get it moved but too many teams in it couldn't do it,'' Grow said. ''We tried to move it to (last Sunday) -- the War Memorial was ready for us -- but there were too many conflicts, (our teams) included.''

Russ to Delaware
Hard-hitting Honeoye Falls-Lima safety John Russ has given a verbal commitment to play football next fall for the University of Delaware and plans to sign a letter of intent with the Division I-AA program on Wednesday.
"They like what everybody likes: He has a willingness to come up and stop the run and yet with his speed he can cover the field and play some man-to-man if they need him to," HF-L coach Billy Donegan said.
Russ, 6-feet-1, 180 pounds, also visited Maine and New Hampshire.

Goose bumps sprout on Cliff Devries' arms as he describes the sensation of descending from a 10-meter-high diving platform and puncturing the water's surface at 34 mph.
"It's not a feeling of flying, but rather a feeling of falling -- that's the rush," says Devries, a former two-time All-American at Rush-Henrietta High School who is in his third year as the men's and women's diving coach at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
"Gravity pulls you rapidly downward and you have to be in total control of your body because there is no leniency with the water. The water is unforgiving."

Amerks honor a leader deluxe
He came to town as a somewhat shy French Canadian kid who couldn't speak English and knew little about the city or the team.
He left five years later as a hero, having won the hearts of fans with his high-scoring, energetic, feisty style of play.
Now, 18 years after he last played at the War Memorial, Bob Mongrain will return for induction in the Rochester Americans Hall of Fame. The Amerks will honor Mongrain before their game with the Milwaukee Admirals on Saturday, Feb. 16.

K-hawks try to silence Wings' offense again
It's The Sopranos night at the First Union Center in Philadelphia as the Wings will be showing clips of the hit HBO organized crime series on the scoreboard throughout their National Lacrosse League game against the Rochester Knighthawks.
The last time these two teams met -- on Dec. 15 in Rochester -- the Knighthawks did a rather impressive impersonation of the hit men in The Sopranos as they silenced the Wings' offense.
Philadelphia's leading scorers, Tom Marechek and Jake Bergey, fired a combined 42 shots at the Rochester net but scored a mere two goals during the Knighthawks' 15-10 victory.

RIT refocuses after defeat to ECAC West rival Elmira
This is no time to sulk for the RIT men's hockey team, and coach Wayne Wilson is making sure his troops aren't singing the blues.
The former No. 1-ranked team in Division III received a healthy dose of comeuppance last weekend, losing 4-2 to arch-rival Elmira, just its second loss in 18 games.
In addition, the Tigers' chances of winning another ECAC West conference title and hosting the ECAC postseason tournament were endangered by losing to the Soaring Eagles.

Bills waiting on Rams' QB coach
Jay Zygmunt, the St. Louis Rams' president of football operations, confirmed that the team has granted the Buffalo Bills permission to talk with quarterbacks coach John Ramsdell next week for their vacant offensive coordinator job.
