A standing-room-only crowd rocked Gates Chili's gym Wednesday night, watching the Spartans and Fairport duke it out in a matchup of Monroe County Division I's two best boys basketball teams.

Big fourth quarter propels Sutherland
Pittsford Sutherland rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Brighton 43-41 in a Monroe County game on Wednesday.
Ashley Cerniglia scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Anne Hellebush scored 14 points and had 12 rebounds for the Knights (11-5).
Hellebush and Cerniglia combined for all of Sutherland's 16 points in the fourth quarter.

C-C tips Athena in Division II
Senior Elijah Reid scored 30 points as Churchville-Chili defeated Greece Athena 63-51 to hand Athena its first Monroe County Division II loss on Wednesday.
The host Saints (5-2 league, 10-5 overall) outscored Athena 23-14 in the final quarter, led by Pat Martin, who scored seven of his 12 points.
C-C led 29-26 at the half, and 40-37 after three.

Cooper's pin powers Olympia
Freshman Peter Cooper recorded a pin at 160 pounds in his second career varsity match as Greece Olympia went on to defeat visiting Greece Athena 33-24.
Cooper pinned Mike Peterella in 1 minute, 13 seconds for the Spartans (4-4).
T. R. Nolan rallied from a 7-4 deficit to defeat Athena's Nelson McNeil 8-7 at 125 pounds. It's Nolan's first win against McNeil in three matches.

Amerks fall to red-hot goaltender
For 53 minutes, Reinhard Divis didn't look capable of making a series of simple saves, let alone any of the spectacular variety.
But then the first-year goalie from Austria underwent a transformation, apparently believing he was Dominik Hasek, and saved the Worcester IceCats.
After Christian Matte fired a shot off the cross bar, Divis made three big-time stops in a span of 35 seconds to preserve a 4-3 lead and the IceCats went on to defeat the slow-starting Rochester Americans 5-4 Wednesday night.

Milley thrilled at reaching NHL
When the Buffalo Sabres told Norm Milley on Wednesday that his first stay in the NHL was over, he drove back to Rochester but felt like he was still airborne.
Milley, a second-year right winger, played the first three NHL games of his career Friday, Sunday and Tuesday. He earned his first point, an assist, in a 2-2 tie with the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh, N.C., on Tuesday.
"It's awesome, it's everything it's made out to be," Milley said of the NHL. "It's something I'll remember forever."

Malawsky brothers stick together
The idea was to protect the family cars from the persistent winter rains in Coquitlam, British Col-umbia.
Instead, the two-car garage that Curt and Derek Malawsky's stepfather built became the boys' personal lacrosse arena.
"We put our lacrosse nets in there and I don't think a car ever saw the garage," said Curt, by three years the elder of Sue Malawsky's two sons. "We put a lot of holes in the walls, broke a few windows along the way, but we had a good time."

Modrak quickly back on the job
Tom Modrak, who has been scouting football players in the NFL for a quarter century, had attended scores of Senior Bowl practices over the years.
But standing on the sidelines in Mobile, Ala., last week was far from mundane for the Buffalo Bills director of football operations.
After undergoing cardiac bypass surgery on Jan. 3 at the Cleveland Clinic, Modrak was back on the job less than three weeks later, clipboard and stopwatch in hand.

Ex-Olympia player back in pro baseball
Jaime Ricigliano's first shot at pro baseball lasted two weeks. He hopes the second stint is much longer.
The Greece Olympia graduate has signed a contract to play with the Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs of the independent Northern League. He reports May 15, and the 84-game season begins one week later.
"It's wonderful," said Ricigliano, 22. "It's great to be a pro again."

Jackson helps GCC top MCC
Brian Jackson scored 31 points as visiting Genesee Community College rallied in the second half to defeat Monroe Community College on Wednesday night, 99-95.
Terry George scored 23, Melvin Council (Wilson) added 16 and LaShawn Levert (Edison) had 15 for the Cougars (19-3). Genesee CC defeated Monroe CC for the second time this year.
Michael Garrett scored 18 points, Latavia Escho added 17, Brandon Andrews (Bishop Kearney) 15 and Ray Henry (Rush-Henrietta) added 13 for the Tribunes (17-5).
