Tim Parrinello has been following Arin Belden's athletic career for a few years now, and he still can't figure it out.
"She can dominate a game," the MCC women's basketball coach says, "and yet she can't jump, she can barely shoot and and she's not very fast."

SU star Shumpert still hurting
The Syracuse University basketball team hopes to have leading scorer Preston Shumpert back in the lineup for Saturday night's road game at Rutgers.
Shumpert, who played just 19 minutes of Monday night's 75-60 loss at Georgetown, returned to the eye doctor Tuesday after having problems with the scratched cornea he suffered late last season. His status was called "day to day" by associate head coach Bernie Fine.
"Hopefully he can go by Saturday, but who knows?" Fine said. "He was really in a lot of pain (Monday)."

Maurice Jackson thought his college career was over following Syracuse University's victory over Kansas State in the insight.com Bowl on Dec. 29.
Instead, the senior receiver from Marshall High will suit up one more time as a member of the North Team in Saturday's Hula Bowl All-Star game in Maui, Hawaii (8 p.m., ESPN).
Jackson was invited despite a modest season that included no postseason Big East honors. He caught 19 passes for 254 yards, a 13.4 average.

Fisher tips Alfred for overtime win
Chad Wiedenhofer hit a free throw with no time left on the clock in overtime to give host St. John Fisher (4-3 Empire 8, 9-8) a 93-92 overtime win over Alfred (4-3, 8-5).

FL releases schedule
Finger Lakes Race Track will race a 161-day meet in 2002. The track's 41st season of racing begins Saturday, April 13, and runs through Nov. 30. Post-times have yet to be determined.
The schedule, which has been approved by the New York State Racing and Wagering Board, has live racing Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14 as well as Friday and Saturday, April 19 and 20. Beginning April 21, the track runs Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday for four consecutive weeks.

Rob-friendly coordinators in the mix
Hold off on writing off Rob Johnson as a future member of the Buffalo Bills.
Among the candidates coach Gregg Williams has confirmed he has spoken with to become his new offensive coordinator is Kevin Gilbride, who was Johnson's offensive mentor in Jacksonville.
Mike Riley, recently fired as head coach of the San Diego Chargers, groomed Johnson at USC and remains his close friend, is also rumored to be on Williams' candidate list.

West Coast suits Van Pelt
Now that he's received a new contract to remain a Buffalo Bill, quarterback Alex Van Pelt is hoping the West Coast offense returns with him.
Van Pelt on Tuesday signed a five-year deal he had agreed on in principle earlier this month, his agent confirmed.
Van Pelt's contract is worth nearly $6 million - top pay for an NFL backup - but comes with incentives and escalator clauses that more than triples if he becomes the team's permanent starter.

Focused Fairport sinks Webster to stay unbeaten
Fairport stayed undefeated with a 104-79 win at Webster in a Monroe County meet Tuesday.
Jon Roberts won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 2.12 seconds and the 100 breaststroke (1:00.29), Matt McGraw won the 100 butterfly (59.10) and Jim Wood won the 100 backstroke (56.74) for the Red Raiders (6-0 league, 10-0 overall).
Fairport took first and second in the 200 medley relay as McGraw, Roberts, Andy Amyot and Cyrus Salehi won in 1:44.01.

Flemming propels Edison past Franklin
Michael Flemming scored all 15 of his points in the fourth quarter as Edison rallied to a 69-67 victory over Franklin in a City-Catholic game Tuesday.
Ernie Calloway scored eight of his 23 points in the fourth for Edison (6-2 league, 12-4 overall). Calloway also grabbed 14 rebounds and Brandon Williams scored 15 points and had 15 rebounds.
Calloway drove to the basket to give Edison a 58-57 lead -- its first lead since the first quarter -- with 3:41 left to play. After it gained the lead, Edison never relinquished it.

Penfield uses late rally to defeat Spencerport
The Patriots did it again. Penfield came from behind for the second consecutive game to defeat Spencerport 54-51 on Tuesday in a Monroe County League game.
Penfield trailed by five points at the half, but Kelly LaPolla hit a 3-pointer with 1:42 remaining and Ashley McMillen iced the game, going 3-for-4 from the free-throw line in the last 24 seconds for the Patriots (4-3 league, 8-7 overall).
Spencerport rallied as Emily Beale's 3-pointer moved the Rangers within one point with 17 seconds remaining. Beale's 3-point attempt at the buzzer hit the backboard and bounced off the rim.

Emigh, McKowne pace Penfield hockey win over Hilton
Jared Emigh scored two goals and goaltender Pat McKowne made 30 saves to lead Penfield to a 4-2 victory over Hilton in Monroe County hockey Tuesday at Webster.
Emigh gave Penfield a 2-0 lead, but goals by Luke McGrath and Jim Burgio tied the score in the third period for Hilton (6-5-1 league, 9-9-1 overall).
Jason Roe's short-handed goal with 6:18 remaining gave Penfield a 3-2 lead. Ed Silco added an empty-net goal with a second to play.

Amerks lose Lacroix to Bullies
Daniel Lacroix will not be on the Rochester Americans bench tonight when the Worcester IceCats come to town. Coach Randy Cunneyworth will, and he promises to stay there.
Rather than uproot family to stay with the Amerks, Lacroix will return to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies of the East Coast Hockey League, where he is a player/assistant coach.
The 13th-year veteran played with the Amerks last weekend, scoring one goal while picking up 18 minutes in penalties. He provided toughness and grit, as well as pizzazz on the bench and in the dressing room.
